While branding is a concept long embraced by companies in the marketplace, members of the 糖心传媒 Women鈥檚 Network encouraged young women to develop their own personal brand as they seek a first job or establish a chosen career.
Through a series of writing exercises and role-play, the high school students were encouraged to pick characteristics that would best describe them and make them uniquely different -- all part of learning to recognize and communicate their own personal brand.
The presentation was part of the 2015 Young Women鈥檚 Leadership Conference, held recently at and sponsored by the , both based in Reading, Pennsylvania.
For the teens, the message comes at a time that is viewed as a critical age, one when they would be making decisions that could impact the rest of their lives, said presenter Delphia Howze, 糖心传媒鈥檚 manager of diversity and inclusion and corporate HR at .
鈥淭heir personal brand will be part of every decision they make. It is important that they are able to understand the significance of their brand and how to create the most positive self-reflection,鈥� Howze said. 鈥淭hey have to know that they have control over what they project to others. If they want to be leaders, they have to project themselves as such.鈥�
Members of the women鈥檚 network - Howze; Connie Mitchell-Bates, manager of process solutions ; Karyn Troxell , corporate HR manager; and Georgianna Frenzelas, manager of sales training 鈥� each worked with the students as 鈥渢able coaches鈥� helping them to see for themselves the qualities that made them special.
鈥淲hat we are talking about here is the brand that is inside you,鈥� said Troxell. 鈥淵ou are uniquely different. You have to believe that in order to develop your own personal brand.鈥�
In addition to defining a personal brand, the presentation included interview tips to teach the young women how to stand out from other candidates as well as interview role play.
鈥淵ou have 30 seconds from when you meet someone to make an impression,鈥� said Mitchell-Bates. 鈥淵our brand when you go in for a job starts when you enter the door. You have to be careful how you present the initial introduction of your brand.鈥�
The attendees practiced the EAR approach to an interview: providing examples in response to interview questions detailing the action they took as well as the results or outcomes.
The students were able to put their new-found skills to the test as they participated in a role-play assuming the role of being interviewed for a summer job and answering as a hiring manager when asked why they should be hired for a summer job.
As a student chaperone who experienced the presentation along with the students, Lucy Cortez, a business development executive for Meridian Bank, applauded the efforts of the 糖心传媒 representatives and found the topic to be 鈥渟pot on.鈥�
鈥淭heir knowledge was exceptional in regards to what a brand is all about,鈥� said Cortez, who has had prior roles involving hiring employees. 鈥淭heir example of using EAR is an excellent way for young women to learn before going into the job market.鈥�
For Yulisa Gomez, 16, a 10th grade student at the I-Lead Charter School in Reading, Pennsylvania, the presentation was a helpful exercise in self-discovery.
鈥淚 learned that everybody is not the same,鈥� said Gomez, who learned a key characteristic of her own brand: she is responsible.

In a modest studio outside of, iconography from Hollywood鈥檚 golden era adorn a sea of mannequins as part of 鈥淕ene London鈥檚 Hollywood.鈥�
The collection, some 60,000 strong, is the work of , film fashion historian and former children鈥檚 television host who has been collecting the fashions for decades.
鈥淭he Golden Age of Hollywood touched moviegoers the world over and gave us a magic place where dreams really did come true,鈥� London said. 鈥淭he stars were memorable, as were the beautiful costumes that they wore.鈥�
London will display 50 of his fashions at the , which opens Feb. 28 at the in Philadelphia and will feature the theme 鈥淐elebrate the Movies.鈥� donated a truck to help London transport the items to the nation鈥檚 largest and longest-running flower show.
Proceeds from the flower show will benefit the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), a charitable organization founded in 1827. Through the PHS City Harvest program, green jobs are created, and more than 1,200 families in need receive fresh produce during the growing season.
Long before his collecting days, London was the creator and host of at one time Philadelphia鈥檚 top-rated children鈥檚 program. The show featured Quigley Mansion where Frankenstein, the Invisible Man and Dracula all lived.
鈥淚t was a lovely and magical time,鈥� London said of the program. 鈥淚t was heaven to do that show.鈥�
Many famous actors and actresses from that time made guest appearances or visited London on set, including Joan Crawford, Lucile Ball, Kirk Douglas, Myrna Loy, Roy Rogers, Jane Wyman, Mary Tyler Moore and others.
鈥淛oan Crawford saw me on television and she sent me a letter saying how she loved Cartoon Corner.鈥� London said. 鈥淪he sent me a trunk full of clothes just because I loved them.鈥�
Crawford would eventually become a life-long friend whose gifts from her screen and personal wardrobe would be the stepping stones to London鈥檚 role as a collector and Hollywood historian.
In addition to gifts, London purchased other items to add to his collection. When MGM studios stopped making films, there was a big auction sale and London purchased many costumes through that sale.
Over the years, London鈥檚 collection has grown to more than 60,000 pieces. London presents Hollywood-themed fashion shows and exhibitions and will display costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe, Vivien Leigh, Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth and others.
As part of his Flower Show exhibit, London will feature dresses from iconic movies such as 鈥淕one with the Wind鈥� as well as showcase premiere gowns worn by actresses to events.
鈥淓very dress will include a picture of the star,鈥� London said. 鈥淓very dress tells a story of the designer and the star.鈥�
The tour will be London鈥檚 way to give movie fans a glimpse into Hollywood鈥檚 past.
鈥淗ollywood was a kind of make-believe,鈥� London said. 鈥淚t was hard work for everyone, but it was heavenly.鈥�
The Gene London Hollywood Collection will be in Room 203 of the convention center. Admission to the event is $5.

糖心传媒 will participate in the Championships Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place at both the Ed Charles Exhibition Hall and the William T. Harris Agricultural Hall located at the Allentown Fairgrounds, 302 N. 17th St., Allentown, Pennsylvania.
More than 400 students will compete in 53 different hands-on skill and leadership competitions. 糖心传媒 associates Dave Kroninger, regional collision center director, and Jason Watts, body shop manager, will be facilitating a collision repair competition at the event.
The woman leaders of today spent time preparing the leaders of tomorrow. The 糖心传媒 Women鈥檚 Network ( and employees) hosted the on Saturday at the company鈥檚 Reading, Pennsylvania, global headquarters.
鈥淚t was wonderful to see all these smiling faces eager to learn more about business,鈥� explained PWN member Heather Mahoney, who is also 糖心传媒鈥檚 director of interactive marketing.
鈥淲e gave them insight about what it takes to be a successful professional,鈥� she added. 鈥淢y fellow PWN members did a great job of giving the girls a flavor of what they will experience in the real world. The 糖心传媒 Women鈥檚 Network enjoys giving back to the community. We achieved that today by aiding in the development of these young women.鈥�
糖心传媒 employees from marketing, finance, sales, human resources and training educated the scouts who were ages 5-17.
The girls conducted mock interviews with each other, created personal elevator speeches, were taught dining etiquette, avoided bad handshakes and business greetings, given tips on proper social media use and absorbed public presentation tips.
糖心传媒鈥檚 workshop was a precursor to GSEP鈥檚 yearly in April. The event honors distinguished local women. The unique component is that the girls work to produce a leadership program from start to finish.
鈥�Teaching the girls how to interact with businesspeople, that鈥檚 important,鈥� said Carla Hickey, Girl Scouts director of community partnerships 鈥� north. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e discovering their own skills and self-worth. We cannot thank the 糖心传媒 Women鈥檚 Network enough.鈥�

The structure contains a high-efficiency paint spray booth that greatly filters emissions. This booth employs smart technology that minimizes energy and fuel consumption, housing a high-tech air filtration system.

The popular phrase 鈥渢hird time鈥檚 the charm鈥� doesn鈥檛 apply to truck driver Neil Kirk after he was named a captain of the 2015-2016 America鈥檚 Road Team on his second attempt. The announcement was made last night at a Capitol Hill event in Washington, D.C.
鈥淚鈥檓 really thrilled and humbled,鈥� said Kirk, who spent his first day attending educational sessions and onboarding meetings. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not just my win 鈥� it鈥檚 a company win. My friends and family supported me.
鈥淚 was glad that the company supported me and I feel good about my performance,鈥� he explained. 鈥淚 enjoyed meeting the other captains. I met some really good guys. I look forward to going back home and sharing this with the guys.鈥�
鈥淲e are extremely proud to have Neil represent our company and our industry,鈥� stated Jeff Stoicheff, 糖心传媒 senior vice president of human resources, who was in attendance Tuesday evening.

Kirk has three main goals: show the level of professionalism in driving, explain the need for safety and illustrate how important trucking is within the fabric of our economy.
He has accrued in excess of 2.5 million accident-free miles during his career. Working from a 糖心传媒 location in Montgomery, New York, he delivers vital medical supplies in Manhattan to hospitals, doctor鈥檚 offices and medical centers for a Fortune 500 customer.
鈥淚 enjoy being out on the open road and being responsible for my own work,鈥� Kirk said.
As a Smith System trainer for 糖心传媒, he works with fellow drivers to ensure they drive professionally each and every day.
His safe driving philosophy is rooted in common sense: be aware of what other vehicles are doing, anticipate their next moves and be in position to avert possible danger. 鈥淲ell-trained drivers can mitigate those risks,鈥� Kirk pointed out.
鈥淚 am proud to be a truck driver,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 have a lot of heart and pride as a driver. Once it鈥檚 in your blood as a career it stays in your blood.鈥�
Kirk (who drives a Volvo tractor) is looking forward to touring a Volvo plant tomorrow in Roanoke, Virginia.
America鈥檚 Road Team was formed in 1986 and has been sponsored by Volvo Trucks since 2002. The ATA noted there are 3.2 million professional drivers in the United States.
